Spring started a week ago and flowers are blooming everywhere. A couple years ago my dad and I dug up about a dozen daylilies from the woods and planted them on the side of the yard. Over the last week they first poked up through the soil. Every year more and more grow, and this year there might be 40 or 50. Even that first year when we dug them up in February, they still bloomed that summer. Across our yard other flowers have bloomed, but not as much as the daylilies.
-JW As I was doing my nature observation, something caught my eye. It was a group of chipmunks (Tamias Striatus). The reason this caught my eye was the number of chipmunks. Maybe it was that I have really never noticed these little mammals at this extent. But that triggered a question that i never thought of, do chipmunks come out more when it cold. As I was thinking of some answers I maybe thought that the chipmunks were getting ready for the long cold winter ahead, by preparing their home or getting food.
MM There is a tree in my backyard that fell a couple of years ago on top of the wall of my tennis court. This happened a little while ago again, but the tree broke through the wall and collapsed on the ground, killing the tree. But this first tree survived, for at least three years by now. Every year we think its dead, but every year buds shoot out, and the tree is like any other. The top picture is the one of the surviving tree, and the other one is the dead one on the other side
JW I always see birds hanging around my house but I never know what they are. They are grey black and white pigeons. The scientific name is Columbidae. They are mostly around my house in Boston.
A few days ago when I was leaving school, I had noticed that it was as foggy so much I wasn't able to see anything. The fog was the result of rain evaporating in the air. It is also just a cloud that touches the ground. So what that means is the air is moist.
- SW Whenever I am walking to the bus stop, there is always a crow calling from across the street. It is usually alone, but occasionally there is another crow from farther away calling back. I don't remember hearing it last spring, so it may have not been here then.
The scientific name for the crow is Corvidae Corvus JW I have a tennis court in my backyard, and there is a long crack down the middle. Every summer, a colony of ants comes out and goes into that crack, and i think they all live there even through the winter. There are thousands of ants, and all live below my tennis court. The scientific name for the ants are Formicidae.
JW There is a family of deer that roams my neighborhood sometimes, and they often go to my backyard. I do not know what kind of deer they are, but the scientific name for all deer is Cervidae. There is one adult, and two babies, but i believe there was more deer in the spring. They may have been multiple families, and one family wandered away from my neighborhood.
MM In my backyard, there are many trees along the edge, in a long line, but the largest one is an oak tree. It is the same tree that had the poison ivy in my other post. The scientific name is Quercus. I have noticed that the oak trees in my backyard are always the last to lose their leaves, and I have always wondered why.
